Figure WN22.3. Genealogical patterns and ecotypes correspond. The figure shows the genealogy of two bacterial ecotypes. Occasionally, advantageous mutations arise that outcompete all other individuals in the same ecotype (red dots) and hence eliminate genetic variation. However, these cannot displace individuals of different ecotypes, which are adapted to use different resources. We observe only the surviving lineages (bold lines), which appear as relatively homogeneous sequence clusters that correspond to ecotypes.
