The fitness of experimental populations of E. coli was measured by competition with their ancestor at one of the three temperatures. Each symbol is the mean of six replicates, which had been grown for 2000 generations at 32°C, 37°C, or 42°C. A fourth set had been alternated between 32°C and 42°C.
